Positive Parenting
Project Lead: Sandra Debello-Bodley
Since 2020, GHAC committed to fostering Positive parenting in West Sonoma County. GHAC received a grant from the Vintners Foundation to support parents after Covid, knowing that they had to be both parent and teacher for at least a year and it would be a challenging time for them. GHAC partnered with a local PACES group (parenting to overcome adverse childhood events) and Dovetail Learning (local non-profit education program with an emphasis on personal, family and community resilience) to offer presentations and discussion groups to parents in selected west county schools.
Upon completion of the grant year GHAC continued to offer parent support groups at 2 rural grade schools in west county. GHAC will continue its collaboration with Dovetail Leaning looking forward to future grant funding to support this joint effort. GHAC is also an active stakeholder in the Lower Russian River 200 Babies Project to help create healthy families that will have healthy children.

Sonoma County ACEs Connection
The importance of our childhood experiences. The more adversity and trauma someone experienced as a child, the higher their risk of negative health outcomes as an adult—like diabetes, heart disease, or depression. We look at why this correlation exists by seeing how stress and adversity affect brain development and genetics and discuss what we can do in our communities to build resilience against the effects of trauma.
